What Are QR Codes?
For those of you who might not know a lot about QR codes, this section will give you a quick explanation about Quick Response codes, what they are and how they can revolutionize your business.
To simplify what a Quick Response code is, just think of it as a hyperlink from the real world to the internet. Only, that it is a lot more powerful than that!
A QR Code looks like this:
At its most basic, a QR Code is a barcode on steroids. They’re used for encoding information in two-dimensional space — like in the pages of magazines, in advertisements and even on TV and Web sites. They were originally used to track auto parts, but have become popular for much broader, often commercial & artistic purposes.
QR Codes are now appearing in print magazines, buses, art, stickers and even in the news!
Who Can Read QR Codes?
Anyone with a cell phone that has a camera and is internet connected. The internet connection is needed if your Quick Response code is built to bring someone to your website, to serve a video, file download or anything internet related.
No internet connection is needed if your QR code is designed to pass your contact details, hidden text message or anything non internet related to the user’s cell phone.
What Can QR Codes Do?
There are many uses for a QR code, some of these uses are:
- Bring a new client to your website.
- Have the client’s cell phone call you.
- Have the client’s smart phone send you a text message.
- Show a video / commercial on the user’s phone.
- Show a Google map with directions.

How Are QR Codes Used?
The list above gives some examples of the thousands of ways we can create and deploy a QR code for you but this question can best be answered in story format:
Lets say that Mary owns a restaurant which is really busy on the weekends and quite slow during week days. After many months of losing money during the week (because of payroll, utilities and taxes) in her new restaurant, Mary decided that if she did not do something innovative to get people to her restaurant, she would have to close up shop!
It has been Mary’s lifelong dream to have her own restaurant and it would be heart crushing to have to close it.
One day, Mary was walking down the street and she noticed people taking pictures of this “funny little image” and as she got closer she asked herself if people were simply crazy for taking pictures of a bar code.
Mary arrived home after her walk and casually told her husband about the crazy people taking pictures of a bar code on the street. Mary’s husband said that the people must be “scanning something” and that he noticed when he skimmed through the manual of his new smart phone that it mentioned something about a scanner and that Mary’s new cell phone must do the same also.
The next day, when Mary was going to work, she noticed yet more people scanning the “funny little image” and her curiosity got the best of her.
Mary walked up to one of the people who just scanned the image and the gentleman told her that those “funny little images” are called QR codes which can be scanned with nearly any cell phone.
Mary then pulled out her new smart phone and scrolled through the Apps until she saw one called QR Scanner. While feeling rather silly for doing the same thing that hundreds of people have done during the past week, she was glad she did!
You see, when Mary scanned the image, a text message popped up on her phone that said:
Curiosity got you! Hundred’s of people just like you have scanned this code – Imagine hundreds of people scanning your code and seeing your offer right there on the spot!
By the way, here’s a 50% off coupon for you in case you can use these QR codes to help your business!
Mary was really excited with the possibilities that these funny little images could do for her business. She can now reach a wider audience with her message and hopefully get people into her restaurant during the week days which are still really slow.
Mary called YapTalk and explained her business problem to her new marketing professional and together they put in place a marketing package.
Since Mary’s restaurant is hurting for business on the weekdays, she decided to give out a 25% off coupon off lunch to whoever scanned her new QR code and 1 free meal to whoever signed up to her mobile short code keyword.
Her professional at YapTalk designed her customs QR codes, complete with the business logo embedded and set Mary up with her own mobile marketing account.
One of Mary’s QR code was designed to give a 25% off coupon AND text “Mary’s Restaurant” to short code 55555 which added the user to Mary’s mobile marketing list. 500 people scanned Mary’s QR code and signed up to receive text messages from Mary’s restaurant.
Monday arrived and like always, Mary’s Restaurant was slow. There were only 3 patrons at the restaurant, but Mary was not worried, she could now send a bulk SMS message to her list of 500 people and inform all of them that the restaurant was giving out free desserts with every lunch and 2 for 1 drinks during happy hour.
Needless to say, Mary sent the offer at 11:00 am and 157 people showed up to eat lunch!
All because of a “funny little image”.
